The race-focused XTR caliper, carrying the same power ratio as the M987 but built considerably lighter. Magnesium is used for the caliper and master cylinder, the lever blade is CFRP, and the mounting bolts are titanium, which is the kind of specification you only see at the top of a range.

Heat management runs through several layers: ceramic pistons, an insulated pad coating, and compatibility with Ice Technology Freeza rotors, which together give it noticeably more heat resistance than the M987. Shimano also balanced the rigidity of the caliper, hose and lever as a system rather than tuning each in isolation, and that is what delivers the improved modulation and control riders notice. The I-Spec II narrow band frees up handlebar space. 316 g.
