The DXR PD-MX70 is Shimano's purpose-built BMX and 4-Cross clipless pedal, and the numbers behind it explain why racers pick it. Release tension is set significantly higher than on Shimano's other SPD pedals, so a hard gate start or a rough rhythm section will not pop your foot out when you need it most.
At the same time the release angle is slightly tighter at 9 degrees, which sounds like a contradiction but is not: it means that when you do decide to unclip, you get out fast, which matters in the split second before a crash. Two degrees of free float keeps it feeling fixed and stable rather than vague. The anodized aluminum cage gives a large contact surface for even pressure distribution, and low-maintenance sealed compact bearings on a cr-mo spindle keep upkeep minimal through a season. Note that these require cranks with a drilled-through pedal thread.
