The DXR is the crankset Shimano built specifically for BMX racing, and it is still the benchmark for a gate start. The stiffness is what you feel first: hollow 6061-T6 arms on a 24 mm hollow chromoly spindle that is pressed into the drive-side arm rather than bolted through it, so the whole assembly acts as one piece and almost nothing is lost to flex when you stand on the pedals.

The 4-bolt 104 mm spider is the newer, lighter design, and steel pedal boss inserts mean the threads survive years of pedals coming on and off. It ships with the matching Shimano external Euro bottom bracket and one spacer, so the oversized bearings and the arms are engineered as a set rather than mixed and matched.
