The 36 hole version of the 451 carbon race rim, built with braking sidewalls for V-brake use. If you run rim brakes, this is the one you want — the brakeless version gives the pads nothing to grip. Thirty-six spokes make it the sturdier of the two drillings, which is why it is the usual pick for a rear wheel or for a rider who is hard on equipment.

Excess builds it from a 3K weave with an undercoat finish, so it stays rigid without the weight penalty of alloy at 289 g. On track that stiffness shows up as a wheel that resists twisting in a rutted turn, so the bike tracks where you point it. Angled nipple holes let each spoke enter the rim at a straighter angle, which builds a more rigid wheel that holds true longer.

One important point: carbon rims need brake pads made specifically for carbon. Standard pads will damage the rim.
