The cross-country XTR caliper, using the same mono-body construction as its four-piston sibling: machined from a single cold-forged block so the body resists flex and more of your lever input reaches the rotor.

Here it runs a pair of ceramic pistons rather than four, which is the right call for XC where weight and modulation matter more than outright gravity power. The gains over the M9000 are substantial: braking power, stroke and time lag all reduced by 30%, higher braking force for less finger input, and a highly linear response that makes the brake easy to read. A new high-rigidity hose and one-piece aluminum caliper add to that, and the whole assembly is 26 g lighter than the M9000. Straight hose connection, 312 g.
