The most affordable way into hydraulic disc braking, and a sensible first upgrade for a newer rider. Shimano tuned the power delivery for riders who are still building confidence, so it is progressive and controllable rather than sharp.

The two-piston caliper runs resin pistons and is notably quiet in use, with reduced hose rattle. Bleeding is done through One Way Bleeding with a funnel, which keeps it clean and quick. The three-finger lever has tool-adjustable reach, so smaller hands can be set up with the lever close enough to pull comfortably. Versatile enough to suit a wide range of bikes, and it can be fitted to IS mounts with an adapter.
